House of Eutopia
Eutopia is een beeldend project van kunstenaar en architect Filip Berte dat Europa als werkterrein heeft. Aan de basis ligt veeleer een intuïtief onderzoek naar het geografische, politieke, historische en culturele Europa dan een wetenschappelijke benadering.
Concreet wordt dit onderzoek vertaald in de bouw van een huis met een Brussels/Europees ‘terrain vague’ als symbolische bestemming: het Huis van Eutopia. Het bouwproces van het Huis is even belangrijk als het eindresultaat: Eutopia loopt als project over verschillende jaren en resulteert stelselmatig in autonome onderdelen of kamers van het Huis, die doorheen Europa op reis kunnen gaan. Het Huis van Eutopia heeft bijgevolg een mobiel karakter en voor de kamers geldt het principe ‘pars pro toto’: elk onderdeel weerspiegelt het geheel, een architecturaal ‘Gesammtkunstwerk’.
Eutopia overbrugt de ruimte tussen het verleden en de toekomst, tussen het onbewuste verleden of collectief geheugen en nieuwe toekomstvisies. Tussen deze twee polen plaatst Filip Berte de actuele socio-politieke context.
Eutopia is a visual project by the artist and architect Filip Berte and its area of activity is Europe. It is based more on an intuitive study of geographic, political, historic and cultural Europe than on any scientific approach. In concrete terms, this investigation takes the form of building a house with a piece of Brussels/European waste land as its symbolic objective: the House of Eutopia. The process of building the House is as important as the final result: the Eutopia project spans several years and systematically results in the creation of individual sections or rooms of the House which can travel all over Europe. Consequently, the House of Eutopia is mobile and the ‘pars pro toto’ principle applies to the rooms: each section reflects the whole, which is an architectural ‘Gesammtkunstwerk’.
Eutopia bridges the gap between past and future, between the unconscious past or collective memory and new visions of the future. Filip Berte places the current social and political context between these two poles.
