Collective Memory Mass Grave is de tweede kamer van het Huis van Eutopia: de kelder. Als fundament neemt het een cruciale plek in binnen het totale project van Eutopia. De kelder belichaamt de thematiek van ‘collectief geheugen’ van Europa. Met deze installatie tracht ik het ongrijpbare van het verleden en de mythes die ze omvat, tastbaar te maken. Net zoals Protected Landscape wil dit werk het publiek binnenleiden in een afgesloten ruimte, om daar het massagraf van collectieve herinneringen te doorwroeten.
Collective Memory Mass Grave bouwt een geheugenlandschap op dat mentaal gelaagd is. De installatie toont zowel natuurlijke als stedelijke landschappen die in het verleden gewond zijn geraakt. Elke plaats, elke topos, elk territorium gebonden aan Europa wordt aan een onderzoek onderworpen dat de littekens van het verleden terug aan de oppervlakte brengt.

Collective Memory Mass Grave is in the cellar and is the second room in the House of Eutopia. As the foundation, it is the most crucial part of the whole Eutopia project. The cellar personifies the theme of Europe’s ‘collective memory’. In this installation, my aim was to make tangible the elusiveness of the past and the myths it comprises. Like Protected Landscape, this work leads the public into a closed space where it can root about in the mass grave of collective memories.
Collective Memory Mass Grave builds up a memory landscape comprising various mental layers. The installation shows both natural and urban landscapes that have been harmed in the past. Every place, every location, every territory associated with Europe, is subject to an investigation that brings the scars of the past to the surface once more.
